Today we watched the video - "Stranger With a Camera"  For Thursday - you should prepare a journal entry reacting to the video.  Also, connect the video to your experience as a stranger with a camera this summer.

On Tuesday (9/17) after submitting journal entries, we will watch a video, “Stranger with a Camera.”  Your journal entry for the next class period will be a response to this video.

A reminder:  Your paper topic proposal (one page, typed, double-spaced) is due on September 24.

We will NOT cover the reading: Nights Comes to the Cumberland, Harry Caudill.  (2 chapters)
in your reading packet.  If you are thinking of a topic related specifically to Kentucky for your paper – you might want to read this section.

Announcements for Tuesday, September 10

• Today's lecture will look at how the current poverty threshold in the US is determined and some of the concerns about our current measuring system and potential revisions.  For this lecture we will use the following handout
• Lecture handout for measuring poverty 9/10/02
• We will then consider current poverty measures based on the most recent Census Bureau release.  In groups, you will take the list of statistics that you created for your journal entry and compile your list into an annotated list for your group.
• Before leaving class I will ask you to submit your own journal entry and your group list created during class.
• For Thursday:
•     Please read pages 109-136 in your course reading packet and for your journal entry answer the eight questions on the first page of today's lecture handout.
• On Thursday, representatives from the Community Action Council will be coming to talk with us about poverty in Lexington and the role of the Community Action Council.

• We will begin class by submitting journal entries
• Today's lecture will be an introduction to what economics is based on a lecture handout

• For next Tuesday read pages 59-63 in the course packet.   Also skim through pages 81-108 in the packet.  Your journal entry will be based on pages 81-108.  Based on this portion of the reading, I would like you to identify the top ten poverty statistics that you feel are the most important to report.  In class on Tuesday, you will be using your journal entries as you work in groups to compile a group list based on your individual lists.  (Journal entries up to this point have been worth 5 points.  This particular entry is worth ten points.

• For Thursday, please read pages 31-56 in the packet.   Your journal entry should be a response to this reading.

For Tuesday, September 3, you should read the first section of your reading packet, "U.S. Poverty" pages 1-26.  For your journal entry, write a one page reaction to the reading.
